The Perfect Hostess Gift: DIY Mulled Wine Kit

Now that exams and clinic responsibilities recede, I can finally let myself think about Christmas.
I've been patiently waiting to assemble some herbal goodies, feeling inspired by the holiday spirit. Christmas time accentuates my love of playing with herbs because it gives me the opportunity to share with family and friends my passion of herbal medicine.

Going to a holiday party and need a hostess gift idea? This DIY Mulled Wine Kit is the perfect little gift that's easy to assemble, crowd-pleasing, and incredibly festive.

But, what if the recipient isn't a drinker? This kit of aromatic spices easily transforms to Christmas Stovetop Aromatherapy, giving the gift of Christmas scent & nostalgia.

The active medicinal ingredients utilized in this warming bevvie and aromatherapy are volatile oils.
Volatile oils can be used in a variety of applications including soothing troublesome digestion, settling or invigorating the nervous system, or fighting off infections. Characteristic smells provide nostalgia, as the part of the brain that processes scent is adjacent to the part of the brain that stores memories, and/or the emotions associated with those memories. Scent is a wonderful way to create atmosphere and ambiance.

In preparation for this project, I dehydrated orange slices. It is essential that you use a lower temperature to preserve the nature of the volatile oils.

  • Use a mandolin for thin, even slices, or try your slicing skills with a sharp chef knife.
  • Set the dehydrator to a low temperature (125-135 degrees C) for 4-8 hours depending on how thick your slices are.
  • If you are using your oven, cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Set on the lowest temperature possible, or use the oven light 8 hours or overnight.
  • Store in airtight container to preserve freshness.

I have plenty of beautiful slices leftover that I will use for simple ornaments and holiday wrapping.
